Victorian Property Renovation & Annexe — Tunbridge Wells, Kent
The Grange, TN2 — Restoring Character, Maximising Space
Not every exceptional project starts with a blank canvas. Sometimes the most rewarding work begins with something already beautiful and a vision to make it even better.
The Grange is a striking Victorian apartment set within private, picturesque grounds in South Tunbridge Wells. Rich in period character, the property had everything that makes Victorian architecture so enduring, generous proportions, original features, and a setting that feels a world apart from the everyday. What it needed was more space, thoughtfully added, and a full renovation that would honour every detail of its heritage while bringing it completely up to date.
Over the course of nearly a year, that’s precisely what we delivered.
The Scope of Work
Victorian Apartment Renovation – Single-story side extension, full renovation including new kitchen and bathrooms, new build detached annexe, renovation of residents garage en bloc. Tunbridge Wells, kent.
Every trade was carefully coordinated by East Sussex Building Services, ensuring the programme ran smoothly and the standard of finish remained consistent from the structural works right through to the finest interior details.
Renovating With Sensitivity
Working on a Victorian property — particularly within a shared residential setting — demands a level of care that goes beyond standard building work. Period features must be preserved, not papered over. New additions must feel considered, not bolted on. And the disruption to the surrounding environment must be managed with respect for neighbours and the grounds alike.
Throughout this project, that sensitivity shaped every decision we made. The extension was positioned and detailed to sit naturally alongside the original building. The sash windows and hardwood doors were specified to be period-appropriate without compromising on modern performance. And the Tom Howley kitchen — while entirely contemporary in its execution — was chosen to complement rather than compete with the cast iron radiators and original features throughout the rest of the home.
The result is a property that feels whole. A home where old and new exist not in tension, but in complete harmony.
The Finished Result
The Grange today is a transformed home — significantly larger, comprehensively renovated, and finished to a standard that does full justice to its Victorian origins.
The extension and garage conversion have added generous, practical space without altering the character of the building from the outside. The new annexe provides a versatile, beautifully finished additional bedroom suite. And throughout the interior, the combination of the Tom Howley kitchen, cast iron radiators, new sash windows, and restored period details creates a home that feels both timeless and entirely liveable.
This is what it looks like when a period property is treated with the care and craftsmanship it deserves.
